blinkbox co-founder Michael Comish has been promoted to Tesco Group Digital Officer. 

Comish will take ownership of the Group blueprint for digital entertainment and will work with Tesco colleagues to shape multichannel strategy, leading a new team tasked with developing a more customer-led approach to online services.

Tesco apppoints MDs for new blinkbox digital entertainment services

Tesco has appointed the MDs for its three new digital entertainment services, confirmed today as blinkboxmusic, blinkboxbooks and Clubcard TV.

The new digital entertainment services, which complement the existing movie and TV streaming offering acquired by Tesco in 2011, will exist as separate entities united under the blinkbox brand – the home of digital entertainment for Tesco customers.

Gavin Sathianathan joins from Facebook as Managing Director of blinkboxbooks, the eBooks service being developed following the acquisition of Mobcast in September 2012.

Mark Bennett will join the blinkbox family from Sainsbury’s to lead blinkboxmusic, a music service to be rolled out following the acquisition of WE7 in June 2012. Both are expected to launch later in the year.

blinkbox strikes movies deal with StudioCanal, adding Apocalypse Now

blinkbox has inked a landmark deal with leading film distributor StudioCanal, snapping up the rights to a range of popular movies including the film frequently voted by critics as the best ever – Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now.

Over 160 movies will be available to rent as part of the deal, including recent acclaimed releases Rust and Bone and Beasts of the Southern Wild.

Other popular movies available include Source Code, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Hurt Locker and Mulholland Drive. Read full post →


blinkbox snaps up children’s TV shows for Christmas

blinkbox has added a raft of children’s TV programmes following deals with eOne, Aardman, Lionsgate and Cookie Jar.

The subscription-free streaming service has snapped up rights to Peppa Pig (eOne), Shaun the Sheep (Aardman), The Adventures of Paddington Bear, Johnny Test (Cookie Jar) and Poppy Cat (Lionsgate).

The content spree is the latest of many for blinkbox which, in the last six months alone, added over 7,000 titles to its catalogue, making it the destination for the latest movies and TV without subscription.

As with all blinkbox titles, the shows can be accessed on a rapidly growing number of devices, including games consoles (Xbox 360 and PS3), tablets and Smart devices (TVs, Blu-Ray players, set top boxes) as well as PCs and Macs.
